Co-Op Life

General Program Information

The Castro Valley Parent Nursery School is a non-profit, parent participation preschool enrolling approximately 50 children ages 3 to 5 years.  Parents who join the Co-op are also enrolled in a non-credit Castro Valley Adult School parent education class and laboratory. Please refer to the Declaration of Responsibilities and Professional Norms for more information on these mandatory classes and general school requirements.

During normal operations, the preschool operates Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 11:30am (“AM session” for 3 and 4 year olds) and from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm (“PM session” or pre-kindergarten for 4 and 5 year olds).  Holidays and vacations coincide with the Castro Valley Unified School District’s calendar.

During special Covid operations, we have divided the school into home-based and school-based learning streams, rather than AM and PM classes. Home-based learners have a suggested schedule of  M-F 9 to 12, but the Zoom content is recorded and available for viewing at the family’s convenience.  The school-based stream is M-Th from 8:30 to 12.  The school-based learners are also able to join in the virtual classroom on Fridays.  Accordingly, we have modified the member responsibilities for school-based families and home-based families for these special, temporary operations.

All participating adult members will be subject to fingerprinting, must show proof of a current negative TB test, and provide proof of MMR and tDap before acceptance into the school. Children are also required to show proof of immunizations.

Five “parent teachers” are scheduled to work each day making the adult-child ratio at least one adult to five children (plus the director). All parents help at the preschool by working an assigned day each week under the guidance of a professional teacher-director. Parents are responsible for preparing a weekly art project, craft, science project or activity and rotate through five work areas on a five-week cycle.

The school’s goal is to create a nurturing, safe, enriched, play-based environment that allows the preschool child to develop the social and emotional skills necessary for success in kindergarten and beyond.
